Web Record

With Web Record, any web browser can be a live tracker! You can track your position with a smartphone, with no special apps to install. Web Record has limitations, though, as phones may pause tracking when the app is backgrounded. You may be able to work around this with settings or apps to keep the phone open.

Here's how it works:

  • The race administrator provisions a TackTracker Cloud account with sufficient Tracker Rights to cover all Web trackers. The administrator also visits their account settings to enable Web Record and specify a codeword to include in instructions to users.
  • The race administrator provides all Web Record Users with instructions to visit tacktracker.com/record to set up Web Record. Here users provide their tracking name and details and the administrator's TackTracker account name and codeword as provided to them.
  • The race administrator sees the users's Web Record "trackers" appear in his or her live tracker list. They are free to enable the web trackers and schedule them into races just like any other tracker. As soon as a web tracker is enabled, the user will be able to start tracking.

Lets walk through the experience in more detail for users and administrators.

Web Record Users

Each Web Record user will be told by their race administrator to visit tacktracker.com/record to set up tracking on their device. Here they provide a few essential pieces of information:

Note the user must be told the TackTracker account name and codeword to use.

After submitting the form, the user will need to wait for the administrator to enable their tracker:

When their tracker is enabled, they are ready to start tracking by touching the "Start Recording" button:

Notes for users

Users should be made aware that on some devices (especially phones), tracking will pause if the device switches off or the browser is pushed to the background. A workaround is to turn off display auto-lock in the phone Settings whilst tracking. It may also be a good idea to turn brightness down to save battery.

Users can view a Recording Log to see if tracking was paused at any point and for how long. If tracking is required at certain checkpoints, users should be instructed to ensure the page is open when passing througb the checkpoint.

Note that devices are not transferrable. For example, if a user sets up Web Record on their computer at home, it will not work on their phone. If they want to use their phone for tracking, they need to set it up on the phone.

Until their device is enabled, users are free to edit their Track details by touching the "Change" button. Here they may also delete their web recorder, if they wish.

Race Administrators

Race administrators use a TackTracker Cloud account to manage live tracking. The first step is to enable Web Record in their account settings dialog. Here we also specify the codeword that users must provide and the tracking interval.

    Web Record account settings

Administrators ask users to go and set up Web Record on their devices. Their instructions should ask users to visit tacktracker.com/record on the device they will use for tracking and provide their boat name and details. They must also provide the TackTracker account name and codeword to use.

When users have set up their Web Record, their web trackers will appear disabled in the administrator's live tracker list on the TackTracker Cloud.

    Web Record tracker disabled

Users will not be able to start recording until the administrator enables their device, by checking the "Enabled" checkbox. A Tracker Right is required for each device enabled.

Initially the device will show as "Inactive", but will show active (green) when the user starts recording.

When enabled, the device is also ready to be scheduled for a live race. See Live Race Setup for information about how to set up a live race and schedule trackers to it.
